Lesson 5 of 5

Your hydration estimate

2 min read

Direct answer: ICMR-NIN says a person needs about eight glasses of water a day, and about two litres for adults over 60. You need more in hot weather and during vigorous activity. ICMR-NIN gives no per-kg formula, so the calculator shows this guidance rather than inventing a precise number. People with kidney or heart conditions should ask their doctor.

Water guidance: From ICMR-NIN 2024, source ICMR-NIN DGI 2024, PDF pp. 106, 118

Consult a doctor or dietitian: these are general estimates for adults. They are not a plan for pregnancy, breastfeeding, children, illness or any medical condition.

Do other drinks count?

Fluids from milk, buttermilk and other drinks add up, but plain water is the main source.

How do I know I'm drinking enough?

Thirst and pale urine are everyday signs; ask a doctor if you have concerns.

FAQ

Why no exact number?

ICMR-NIN gives guidance, not a formula, so Snacademy doesn't invent one.

Is more always better?

No; ask a doctor if you have a medical condition.
